Screen Time Habits

text - screem time habits

As parents, we all want our children to thrive—building confidence, discovering who they are, and developing healthy relationships. In today’s digital age, social media adds unique challenges.

Psychologist Erik Erikson identified key developmental stages:

  • Industry vs. Inferiority (Elementary Years): Children start comparing themselves to others, gaining confidence through success. Social media can heighten feelings of inadequacy by
    emphasizing comparisons.
  • Identity vs. Role Confusion (Teen Years): Teens question Who am I? Social media presents conflicting ideas about identity before their brains are ready to process it, leading to confusion.

Children’s brains are still developing, especially areas related to decision-making and emotions, until about age 25.

Small Steps for Big Impact

You can guide your child thoughtfully:

  • Screen-Free Meals: Keep devices away during mealtime to foster connection.
  • Bedtime Boundaries: Turn off screens at least an hour before bed.
  • Monitor Social Media: Limit time, review content, and stay involved.
  • Encourage Offline Activities: Support hobbies, sports, and clubs.

Start with connection: Engage with your child during their first screen interactions. Talk openly about social media’s challenges and model healthy habits. Together, we can help children thrive online and offline.
