Program Overview & Structure
Q: What grade levels are included in the Shared Responsibility program?
A: Our Shared Responsibility program covers Gr. 1-12
Q: Do students enrolled in the Shared Responsibility program follow the Alberta Education outcomes?
A: Yes. Students follow Alberta Education outcomes in any teacher-directed courses (online or PBR). However, in parent-directed home education courses, families have the freedom to choose their own curriculum and approach.
Do students in the Shared Responsibility Program get assigned a support teacher?
A: Yes. Students in the Shared Responsibility Program are assigned different types of support based on the courses they take:
- For teacher-directed courses (online or PBR), students are assigned a classroom teacher who provides instruction, grades assignments, and offers academic support.
- For parent-directed home education courses, students are assigned a home education facilitator, who supports parents in developing and implementing their home education plan. The facilitator meets with families in the fall and spring and is available for guidance throughout the year via email, phone, or Google Meet.
2. Student, Parent & Supervisor Expectations
Q: What is my role as a parent or supervisor?
A: Parents and supervisors play a vital role in their child’s education, with responsibilities that vary depending on the type of courses chosen:
- For teacher-directed courses (online or PBR): Parents and supervisors partner with teachers by actively supporting student engagement and fostering a learning environment that encourages success. This includes helping students manage their time, ensuring they stay on track with assignments, and communicating with teachers as needed.
- For parent-directed home education courses: Parents and supervisors take full responsibility for selecting curriculum, planning lessons, delivering instruction, tracking progress, and assessing their child's learning. They work closely with their home education facilitator for guidance and support.
Q: Are report cards issued in the Shared Responsibility program?
A: Yes. Report cards are issued for all teacher-directed courses (online and PBR). However, parent-directed home education courses do not receive report cards, as parents are responsible for assessing their child's progress.
Q: Are teachers and my home education facilitator available every day?
A: Yes, full time teachers and home education facilitators are online Monday - Friday, from 9:00am - 3:00pm..
Q: Do I get support creating my home education plan?
A: Yes. While we encourage families and supervisors to design their own individualized home education plan, facilitators are available to assist if needed. Support can be requested upon registration.
3. Technology & Support
Q: What are the technology requirements for the Shared Responsibility program?
A: The technology requirements depend on the courses chosen:
- For teacher-directed courses (online and PBR): A computer with internet access is necessary to access course materials, submit assignments, and communicate with teachers.
- For parent-directed home education courses: There is greater flexibility, as parents choose their own resources. However, families may still require a computer for research, digital resources, or communication with facilitators.
Q: Are there opportunities to connect with teachers and classmates in person?
A: Yes! Our Community Connections program offers Activity Days, Learning Huddles, Equip Huddles, Impact Huddles, and Celebration Events across the province, providing students with opportunities to learn, collaborate, and build relationships in person and virtually. These events help foster a sense of community while complementing the online learning experience.
4. Costs & Funding
Q: Is there a cost to register for the Shared Responsibility program?
A: There is no cost to register in our Shared Responsibility program for Alberta residents. The only costs you may incur are shipping (if we mail books) or consumable workbook fees (depending on the course). In some cases, home education funding may help cover these expenses.
Q: Do you offer funding within the Shared Responsibility program?
A:Yes. Funding is provided for the parent-directed portion of a student’s program. For teacher-directed courses (online and PBR), all required learning resources are provided.
5. Registration & Enrollment
Q: Are there deadlines or restrictions for registration?
A: Yes. Students must be registered by September 26, 2025, at noon. Additionally, once registered, the balance between teacher-directed and parent-directed courses cannot be adjusted after the registration deadline. It is important to carefully consider your course selections before finalizing registration.
