PBR Bible 8

This course allows for a choice of resources from the following:

  • Apologia; What We Believe series  (4 different books-choose 1) Also includes Notebooking Journal
  • Explorer’s Bible Study: God’s Perfect Plan

  • RightNowMedia - free online through with church account- https://www.rightnowmedia.org/


Marks are based on 9 monthly Bible logs and 3 projects.  Monthly Bible logs are a reflection of completed memory work, devotions, Christian Service and samples from your chosen Bible resource. Projects are an opportunity for choice in demonstrating more specific Biblical learning from the resource or other sources.

PBR PE/Health 8

Physical Education

This course requires nine monthly activity logs along with a few projects.  Monthly logs evaluate time spent being active, regularity of activity, and types of activities.  Projects include goal setting, demonstrating activity in action and self reflection.

Health

The Health program covers three main areas: wellness, relationship choices, and life learning choices.  Students are required to complete assignments from their chosen resource. 

Students will be submitting specific samples of work each month from their chosen resource.  There are also some additional Moodle assignments/projects to cover those outcomes not included in the chosen resource. 

The choices for resource is as follows:

PBR Math 8

The content of PBR Math 8 is organized around 9 major units:

  • Squares and Roots
  • Integers
  • Operations with Fractions
  • Percents, Ratio, and Rates
  • Measurement of Surface Area and Volume
  • Geometry and Nets
  • Polygons and Transformations
  • Data Analysis and Probability
  • Linear Equations


Course Philosophy

The print-based resource (PBR) Math 8 course encourages students to understand the big ideas of math and connect its principles to real life application rather than simply memorize formulas and algorithms. It is designed for motivated students with engaged supervisors. It is for the student who would like more independence and choice in what resources and learning activities they want to complete. They will have an opportunity to showcase and develop their own personal Learning Journey Portfolio related to the topic being explored as well as demonstrate achievement based on provincial outcomes and expectations through assignments, projects, and  quizzes designed by the teacher. 


Prerequisites

A strong background in Math 7 or equivalent is recommended. 

It is also recommended that you choose the resource that has previously been used.

Purchased by Students

  • A scientific calculator -  but it does NOT need to be a fancy one
  • Geometry set
  • Graph Paper - can print off the internet
  • Students will need a scanner for submitting work. (can be done with a cell phone app)


Suggested time required

The course is organized around 36 weeks.

Practice work is assigned based on following the print-based resource schedule. Some work from the resource may be omitted or supplemented as necessary.

Students will typically have a whole week for reflection and assessment at the end of each unit.

This would take ROUGHLY 4 - 6 hours a week, depending on the student.

PBR Science 8

Students will study five units:

  1. Mix and Flow of Matter
  2. Cells and Systems
  3. Light and Optical Systems
  4. Mechanical Systems
  5. Freshwater and Saltwater Systems

The Science 8 PBR course is designed for motivated students with engaged supervisors. It is for the student who would like more independence and choice in what resources and learning activities they want to complete.  They will have an opportunity to showcase and develop their own personal Learning Journey Portfolio related to the topic being explored as well as demonstrate achievement based on provincial outcomes and expectations through assignmentsprojects, and quizzes designed by your teacher.  A PBR student will expect to receive on-going feedback, assessment, and personal instruction as needed via email, moodle messaging, phone, or google meets.

It is also highly encouraged for PBR students to take advantage of group activities both locally in their area as well as virtually to continue to experience community, relationship building, and opportunities for group instruction and interaction.  These activities can be added to your Learning Journey Portfolio.
