At-Home Learning and Technology Requirements

At NorthStar Academy, we believe that a well-prepared learning environment and engaged parental support are essential for student success. Whether learning in a teacher-directed or parent-directed program, students thrive when they have a dedicated workspace, the right technology, and consistent guidance from a parent or supervisor.

Productive Learning Space

At NorthStar Academy, we recognize that learning environments look different for each family. However, having a designated learning space helps students stay focused, engaged, and successful in their studies.

A Well-Equipped Learning Space Should Include:

  • Dedicated workspace – a consistent, designated area for schoolwork
  • Well-lit and quiet – an environment free from distractions
  • Free from clutter – an organized space that supports focus
  • Limited access to other technologies – distractions such as phones, TV, and gaming devices should be minimized
  • Access to an adult supervisor – students benefit from regular check-ins and support (usually a parent)

Please note: Student bedrooms are NOT recommended as primary learning spaces

Parent & Supervisor Support

Parents and supervisors are essential members of our learning community and key contributors to student success. Their involvement provides structure, accountability, and encouragement, helping students stay on track and engaged in learning. To create a supportive learning environment, parents and supervisors play an active role in:

  • Establishing a school routine – Setting consistent start times and expectations for daily learning.
  • Dividing the school day into manageable time slots – Breaking learning into focused periods with clear goals.
  • Scheduling proper breaks – Encouraging movement and downtime to maintain focus and well-being.
  • Offering regular check-ins – Monitoring progress and providing encouragement throughout the day.
  • Answering student questions – Supporting students in problem-solving and navigating their coursework.
  • Providing accountability and encouraging engagement – Helping students stay on task and actively participate in learning.
  • Checking NSA emails daily – Staying informed on school communications and updates.
  • Reviewing the student’s PowerSchool and/or Moodle grade sheets regularly – Tracking progress and identifying areas for support.
  • Communicating with teachers as needed – Partnering with teachers to address concerns and celebrate successes.
