Helping Our Students SOAR

As we begin this new school year, it’s important to set our students up for success in their at-a-distance learning journey. One helpful framework is SOAR, developed by Jessica and John Hannigan. SOAR stands for Self-control, On-task, Achievement, and Respect—four essential behaviors that will help students navigate and excel in an online learning environment.

By encouraging students to take ownership of their learning behaviors, stay organized, and engage respectfully with their virtual learning community, you can help them build strong habits for success. As parents and supervisors, your guidance is invaluable.

Self-control

  • Follow directions
  • Minimize distractions
  • Wait for your turn to share
  • Use chat features appropriately

On-task

  • Log-in on time
  • Set daily goals
  • Organize your materials
  • Be present/actively engage

Achievement

  • Create and maintain a schedule
  • Reach out to teachers for help
  • Share and participate
  • Write in complete sentences

Respect

  • Respect others perspectives
  • Use kind words
  • Use proper text etiquette
  • Mute microphone when others are speaking
